Current employment and/or volunteer work:
For the past two years, I’ve been involved with ACT UP NY (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power), where I mostly serve as the secretary.  Before that, I was involved with Occupy Wall Street and helping maintain a queer presence at protests and the main camp at Zuccotti Park.  My day job is working as post-production manager for the advertising department of Ralph Lauren.  Before that, I worked six years doing the same type of thing for the cable channel BBC America.

Suggestions/recommendations for current UNC students regarding career preparation, job searches, or career success:
In college, I was a drama major even though almost everyone in my life outside the drama department advised against it and didn’t understand it.  Exploring theater and its possibilities opened me up to many new experiences and ideas that I needed to grow beyond my conservative Christian past in Tennessee.  I have had doubts throughout my career, but I am glad I always followed my interest in the moment and looked beyond the expectations everybody around me was putting on me.  I recommend students following their own path and listening to their hearts.

What do you know now that you wish you would have known as a UNC student?
I wish I had had more confidence in college.  I was very shy and never thought I could leave the south or explore the world.  It took me years to realize that I could make my own way, live wherever I want, speak my mind, and adopt my own values independent of religion, family and mainstream society.
