Cynthia Erivo (1987-)

Cynthia Erivo (born January 8, 1987) is an award-winning actress, singer, and producer. She first gained widespread recognition in the Broadway revival of The Color Purple a Tony Award. With her role as Celie, she earned a Grammy and an Emmy. She then transitioned in to the film industry. She earned Academy Award nominations for both Best Actress and Best Original Song as Harriet Tubman in Harriet (2019). She has continued to take on major roles, including playing Elphaba in Wicked.  

Born in London to Nigerian parents, Erivo attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art before starting her career in theater. Her performances are known for their emotional intensity, vocal strength, and ability to bring historical and fictional characters to life. In addition to acting, she is also a talented musician and songwriter. 

Erivo is also a dedicated advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and representation. As a queer woman, she has spoken openly about the importance of inclusivity in Hollywood, addressing the lack of diversity and opportunities for LGBTQ+ artists of color. She uses her platform to highlight LGBTQ+ struggles and successes, encouraging visibility and authenticity in entertainment. She has participated in Pride events, collaborated with LGBTQ+ organizations, and consistently amplified marginalized voices. 

Beyond her artistic achievements, Erivo’s influence reaches far and wide. She is a role model for aspiring performers, particularly women of color and LGBTQ+ individuals. Her commitment and advocacy continue to shape the entertainment industry.
