LGBTQ Center Involvement Opportunities

Safe Zone Facilitation

Interested in learning to facilitate Safe Zone Trainings?  Our Safe Zone program would not be possible without volunteers.  The demand for Safe Zone keeps increasing and we need more facilitators to keep the program growing. If you have already been Safe Zone and Safe Zone GI/GE trained, and you would like to be part of creating a more welcoming, inclusive campus climate, becoming a Safe Zone Facilitator is the next step!

Safe Zone and Safe Zone Gender Identity/Gender Expression training are prerequisites for this training. Must be available for observation and co-facilitation before being approved to facilitate alone.

LGBTIQ Advocacy Award Committee

Committee members will review nomination forms and select the LGBTIQ Advocacy Award recipients (one graduate/professional student winner and one undergraduate student winner) based on preset criteria. Awards will be presented to one graduating undergraduate and one graduating graduate/professional student.

Click here for more information and to apply.

LGBTIQA+ Speaker Series

(Formerly Graduate Speaker Series) LGBTIQA+ Speaker Series is a program of QGAPS (Queer Graduate and Professional Students), a collaboration between the LGBTQ Center and the Graduate School's Program for Diversity & Student Success, with the goal to share the work of graduate & professional students, faculty, and local researchers conducting research related to sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression.

If you are conducting LGBTQ-related research and are interested in presenting as part of this series in the 2018-2019 school year, please complete this form and we will be in touch as soon as possible.

Volunteer at Lavender Graduation

Lavender Graduation is a commencement ceremony honoring Sexuality Studies minors, graduating LGBTIQA+ identified students, and their allies. It is a cultural celebration that acknowledges the achievements and contributions that students of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions have made. Undergraduate student and graduate/professional student winners of the LGBTIQ Advocacy Award are announced during the ceremony.

Program in Sexuality Studies

UNC CH has a thriving program in Sexuality Studies. Not only are there many courses and teaching opportunities, there are many events that are typically open to the entire campus (students, staff and faculty). Visit the website to learn more details.

Benefits Equity

The University provides dental, group term life and accidental death and dismemberment insurance for domestic partners of faculty and staff. The major medical health plan does not allow employees to purchase coverage for their same sex spouse or partner. The benefits policy is controlled by the Office of State Personnel not by UNC-Chapel Hill Human Resources or the General Administration for the UNC system. Please contact the Office of State Personnel with specific questions. The LGBTQ Center, UNC-Chapel Hill's Human Resources Department, and General Administration continue to advocate for full benefits equity with respect to major medical health insurance benefits and leave policies.

To elect coverage for a same sex spouse or partner during annual enrollment, employees must complete an “Affidavit of Domestic Partnership” form and the corresponding enrollment form(s) for the plan you want to enroll in. Send all forms to Benefits Services. Visit the Human Resources website for more details about the policies and to find the current forms.
