Volunteer with the LGBTQ Center

The LGBTQ Center accepts applications and trains volunteers throughout the year. There are several volunteer opportunities from which you can choose. You could elect to serve as an office assistant, volunteer on a program planning committee, become a speakers bureau member, or become a Safe Zone facilitator.

Office assistants staff the office, greet visitors, assist with library tasks, and provide information relevant to visitor requests. Office assistants also provide other administrative and programmatic support. All office personnel will be trained to handle commonly arising situations.

Program planning committee members are responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating specific programs under the guidance of LGBTQ Center staff members. You can sign up for any of the following committees:

  • NC Pride Float
  • Monthly Social Events
  • National Coming Out Day
  • Transgender Awareness and Day of Remembrance
  • HIV/AIDS Awareness Week
  • Triangle Resource Fair
  • Lavender Graduation.

Speakers bureau and Safe Zone facilitators assist with the implementation of the Safe Zone program as well as other requests for panels or presentations.

To be a Volunteer, applicants should:

  • Demonstrate a desire to challenge heterosexism and the gender binary
  • Demonstrate an understanding of intersecting systems of marginalization (e.g., sexism, racism, classism, ableism) and a commitment to social justice broadly defined
  • Act in accordance with the LGBTQ Center Values Statement
  • Make thoughtful commitments about volunteer schedules they create for themselves
