National Coming Out Day commemorates the October 11, 1987 Second National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights, which called for President Ronald Reagan to address the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
Every year, we celebrate coming out as part of the broad network of communities generally referred to as LGBTQ, but that include lesbian, gay, bisexual, pansexual, transgender, two-spirit, same gender loving, queer, intersex, asexual, aromantic, and many more identities. At Carolina, we do so by serving cake and taking photos in The Pit to allow those of us who are "out" an opportunity to celebrate and be visible, and to recognize the reasons that many others stay "closeted."
