Graduate and Professional Student Organizations

Graduate and professional student organizations that focus on LGBTIQA+ communities, or with missions that align with the Center's goal of fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment for UNC-Chapel Hill community members of all sexual orientations, gender identities and gender expressions.

Health Sciences LGBTQ Alliance

The Health Sciences Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) Alliance is an association of students, faculty, and staff from the schools of the health sciences (Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health, and Social Work) working to promote the health and well-being of people in LGBTQ communities. The Alliance works to increase training and exposure of Health Sciences students to the concerns of LGBTQ people by sponsoring speakers, panels, and conferences at these schools throughout UNC-Chapel Hill.

  • Build a social and professional network for GLBT students and straight allies
  • Create opportunities for discussion and interaction in the Kenan-Flagler community to address GLBT issues

Lambda Law Students Association

The Lambda Law Students Association seeks to educate the Carolina Law community about the legal, political, and social issues facing the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and questioning community.

School of Information & Library Sciences - Checked OUT

Checked OUT provides diverse populations and groups, including LGBTQ-identified students and allies, with the opportunity to attend professional and social programs dealing with issues of sexual identity and other forms of diversity in LIS. We also work with groups and faculty members across campus to facilitate communication about events and other information related to diversity concerns in SILS.

School of Medicine - Medical Student Pride Alliance

Medical Student Pride Alliance (MSPA) is the organizational home for LGBTQIA+ students and faculty at the UNC School of Medicine. The MSPA advocates for structural changes within the school and the health system at large, to support the health and wellbeing of queer and trans patients of all identities. We utilize an intersectional framework in order to better educate the student body about the diverse identities and experiences that queer and trans patients hold, and to better support all LGBTQIA+ students in freely pursuing their medical career goals.

Our group is composed of students, faculty, and administrators of UNC’s School of Medicine.  Through interactions with the School of Medicine and other UNC Health Schools, we seek to better educate our classmates and ourselves on issues faced by LGBT patients in seeking health care.

School of Dentistry - LGBdenT

LGBdenT is a community of individuals at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Dentistry. Our goal is to increase the visibility of the LGBTIQ community and its allies to promote a welcoming environment of openness and acceptance for all. Our mission statement is, "To celebrate the diversity represented in the student body and to provide a comfortable and welcoming environment for students of all sexualities and gender expressions at the UNC School of Dentistry."

School of Social Work - LGBTQ Caucus

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Caucus serves to promote a better understanding of issues related to sexual orientation relevant to the community in general and to social workers in particular. It seeks to identify available resources and to be a resource for students and faculty.

LGBTQ Health Disparities Research Collaborative

The objective of the LGBTQ Health Disparities Research Collaborative is to provide graduate students and faculty members at UNC-Chapel Hill with a space to engage in critical conversations related to issues of LGBTQ health. In particular, we bring individuals together to share ongoing research, network, and collaborate on research, practice, and advocacy efforts here at UNC-Chapel Hill. In line with the NIH 2016-2020 Sexual and Gender Minority Health Strategic Plan, our efforts aim to 1) strengthen the community of scholars to promote innovative, multidisciplinary research on population-level LGBTQ outcomes, 2) provide solutions to current barriers in conducting LGBTQ health research, and 3) expand the current knowledge base on sexual and gender minority health and well-being.
