Unwind & Design: Identity
February 15, 2023 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
As LGBTQIA+ human beings, questions surrounding self and identity are common. Sometimes, these questions can involve a struggle with the self and manifest in discomfort with our physical bodies. “Unwind & Design,” a collaborative effort between the LGBTQ Center and UNC Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), is the first of what will hopefully be a series of events that combine art, meditation, and self-compassion. On February 15th, our debut “Unwind & Design” event will begin with a mindfulness exercise, and proceed with creating art that helps to focus on feelings towards the self, recognizing feelings towards the body, and increasing feelings of self-compassion and self-acceptance. Participants will be encouraged to create an art piece that helps express their feelings in an abstract way. There will be time to share and process art pieces at the end, what emotions are involved with participants, and what messages participants might want to give their bodies, with sharing being completely voluntary. The purpose of this event is to create space for LGBTQIA+ people to focus on their relationship with themselves in a way that honors their journey and increases a sense of harmony within their mind, body, and spirit. Participants are welcome to bring their own materials to work with, but snacks and supplies will be provided.
